Guide to Podcasting
What is a podcast?
Rather than downloading each talk individually, you can subscribe to our podcast, which will mean that you automatically have all our talks downloaded to your computer and sat waiting for you, so that you can listen to them whenever you want. Once you're subscribed to a podcast, your computer can check if new talk is available, so that it can download it for you.
How do I subscribe?
There are various programs you can use. We would recommend either iTunes or Juice, depending on how you use your computer.
iTunes - it is very easy to subscribe to a podcast and listen to it in iTunes. It is recommended you use iTunes if you regularly use iTunes (at least once a week). Click here to subscribe in iTunes.
Juice - takes a little more initial configuring (although it's not very complicated) and is easy to use once setup. Juice can sit in your system tray (bottom right hand corner of the screen) and automatically check for any new talks everytime your computer is connected to the internet. This is recommended if you don't regularly run iTunes and/or you would like to listen to your podcast using a different media player.
What file format are the talks delivered in?
All the talks are delivered in the MP3 file format. This means they can be played on any portable media player (e.g. iPod or Zen) or computer and any CD burning software will be able to create an audio CD from them.
How can I create an audio CD?
You need a CD-RW drive (a DVD-RW drive will also work); virtually all computers have one of these. You'll also need some CD burning software. Often, such software will come bundled with your computer (e.g. Nero or Roxio). However, if you're not sure if you have the right software, just download CD XP Burner Pro for free (it is excellent).
What's the difference between an MP3 CD and an audio CD?
MP3 CDs are CDs that simply contain MP3 files. Some modern CD players (including in-car ones) and DVD players will play these - but older and cheaper models probably won't. The advantage is that you can fit much more playing time on them than on a standard CD (almost 30 hours of our talks!), which is great if you want weeks worth of listening material for the car!
An audio CD is the CD you're used to - around 70 mins of playing time. Your CD burning software will take the MP3 file you downloaded and change its format so that it can be read by most CD and DVD players. Some very old CD players do not like homemade CDs, but the vast majority will play them.
